The Dialogue on Agricultural Biotechnology (“Dialogue”) establishes a specific dialogue format in the field of biotechnology within the framework of the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement and Interim Trade Agreement. The Dialogue will lead to an increased cooperation in this area. This can be used as an example for similar agreements on common dialogue and exchange platforms.
Description
In the context of issues related to the agri-food chain, the agreement establishes under Article 15.4 that the Parties shall conduct dialogues (expert level) and exchange information on the application of agricultural biotechnology, covering, inter alia:
- exchange of information on policies, legislation, guidelines, good practices and projects on biotechnology products;
- discussions on specific topics related to biotechnology that may affect mutual trade, including cooperation on genetically modified organisms testing and information related to asynchronous authorisations of GMOs in order to minimise the possible impact on trade.
The subcommittee has not yet met (as of May 2026).
